Witnesses say two men in their early 50’s Saturday night died attempting to apprehend the Boko Haram member who attempted to park a Honda Oddesy car beside a house close to the TV viewing centre where hundreds of people had gathered to watch the final of the UEFA Champions League between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
Daily Trust gathered that the bomber had arrived the area around 4pm on Saturday where he gave the car to a mechanic at a workshop near the centre. As the car underwent repairs, the man was said to have walked off nearby, apparently to survey the area.
The younger brother of one of the victims, Garba Bello, told our correspondent that at about 9:05 pm when the explosion occurred, the bomber had attempted to enter the viewing centre where about 100 youths were but was prevented entry by a barricade and some young men who said only members of the community were allowed to pass through the area.
The bomber was said to have searched for a quiet location about 20 feet to the viewing centre where he made attempts to park his car in front of the house of one Alhaji Bello Ahmen Ali.
“The suspect was alone in his car when Alh. Bello, my brother and his friend Alh. Auwal Yusey came to me and told me that they were suspecting the owner of the vehicle. So we approached him and asked him to leave. He put on his inner light to show us that he had nothing to hide and that the car was having trouble, but my brother insisted that he push the car away from his house. At the time I left them, the man had agreed to
leave, but soon after I entered my house, we heard an explosion.” Garba recalled.
According to Garba, unknown to them, there was also a Hilux van waiting for the bomber across the road. The white Hilux was said to have sped off after the explosion which claimed the bomber, Alh. Bello and his friend, Alh. Auwal Yusey and another victim.
The loud explosion ignited a huge flame that engulfed Alhaji Bello’s residence which lasted for over an hour before the arrival of the fire service. Our correspondent who went to the scene of the explosion yesterday reports that about three cars were upturned as a result of the impact. The two men who accosted the bomber, Alhaji Bello and his friend Auwal Yusey were buried yesterday.
