A 37-year-old man, Olarenwaju Akinbimi, on Friday appeared before an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court, charged with attempting to kidnap a six-year-old girl.
Akinbimi, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted kidnap.
The Prosecutor, ASP. Isah Atanegbe, told the court that the accused and others still at large committed the offences on May 5 at Ore in the Ore Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Atanegbe said that Akinbimi attempted to kidnap the girl at 8.15 a.m., while on an errand for her mother.
The prosecutor said that the attempted kidnap was foiled when the victim raised an alarm which attracted passers-by, who apprehended the accused.
He said that the offences contravened Section 516 and 362(2) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol.1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
The accused, who was not represented by any counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Section 362 (2) prescribes a two year jail term for anyone found liable of kidnap.
The Magistrate, Mr Daomi Adebisi, granted the accused bail in sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adebisi said that both sureties must be civil servants in the employment of the Ondo State Government and not below grade level 12.
He also directed that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means and produce two recent passport photographs.
Adebisi adjourned the case until May 28 for mention. (NAN)
