Man United close in on Benfica defender after seeing off Zenit

Manchester United look to have been beaten by Zenit St Petersburg in the race to sign Ezequiel Garay this summer.

The Benfica defender, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester and watched on several occasions by the club's scouting network, is expected to snub the Premier League and sign for Andre Villas-
Boas's Russian side this week.

Zenit are prepared to meet the £16.5m transfer activation clause in Garay's contract and would prefer to conclude a deal for the 27-year-old before he meets up with Argentina on international duty ahead of the World Cup.

Garay has one year remaining on his existing deal at Benfica but his former club, Real Madrid, will receive 50% of any future transfer fee the Portuguese club receive.
