The explosion which occurred at the Central Mosque in Kano State on Friday, November 28, has claimed over a 100 lives, reports say.
Multiple bombs went off in the area while hundreds of Muslim faithful were gathering to observe the Jumaat prayer and some witnesses say the casualty figure might be as high as 300, Premium Times reports.
However, a spokesman for the police force in Kano, Mustapha Abubakar, said that officers were “still taking stock of the actual persons that have died” and as such could not confirm the exact number of casualties.
The Central Mosque is one of the largest in the city and is where the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, usually leads the Friday prayers.
Sanusi had recently stated that Nigerians should defend themselves against attacks by terrorist sect Boko Haram, who are believed to be responsible for this latest attack.
The emir was however in Saudi Arabia when the explosion occurred.
