The time to break out a lighter wardrobe and stash the heavy stuff away for next winter is coming soon. Make the most out of the transition process and take inventory of your wardrobe.
Yes, it can feel overwhelming, time consuming, and messy if you do it all at once, but it's easy to tackle in a few stages. Here are four ways to overhaul your closet.
1. Rotate your essentials
Seasons change and so should your easy-to-reach clothes. When the snow thaws, move your winter gear to the back of the closet or a storage container. But leave at least one or two of your go-to sweaters and a coat within reach. You'll still encounter cool days and nights that will require a thin layer. You can always throw these stragglers to the back when you're sure the temps will remain warm.
2. Clean things up
While we're on the topic of sweaters and coats, don't just store them as is—instead, take a minute and see if any need to be cleaned. If you drop off pieces to be dry cleaned a few at a time, it won't take a bite out of your wallet all at once. Leave them wrapped so they'll be ready to roll.
3. Out with the old
Be honest. Do you really need four white polo shirts, two of which you know you'll never wear? (Hint: the answer is no.) Obviously, it's better to eliminate redundancies in your closet and replace your socks, underwear, and T-shirts often.
Also, get rid of whatever doesn't look good on you. Pull in a second opinion so you don't talk yourself into keeping it another year. If something hasn't fit you in a long time, admit that it may never. Don't sabotage your confidence by wearing clothes that aren't flattering. Replenish your closet with these 11 basics.
4. Think ahead
As for coats and suits, examine your selection. Your best-fitting neutrals (black, grey, brown) should move to the front along with your favorite patterns (glen plaid, seersucker). Do they need a quick cleaning or spot removal? Drop them off before you'll actually need them. Shelling out now is better than realizing your go-to wedding rig has a stain on it.
