Tunisian politician, Beji Caid Essebsi has been named the winner of the country’s first free presidential poll.
88-year-old Essebsi won 55.68% of the votes in the elections which held on Sunday, December 21, to defeat caretaker President Moncef Marzouki who garnered 44.32% of the votes.
The election results were announced on Monday, December 22, by the head of the electoral commission, Chafik Sarsar.
Essebsi, a veteran who previously served under President Zine el-Abedine Ben Ali, urged all Tunisians to "work together" for stability.
This is the first time that Tunisians have been able to vote freely for a president since gaining independence from France in 1956.
