When nominees for the 2014 BET awards were announced, we were like wow, Davido (Nigeria)
Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania), Mafikizolo (South Africa), Sarkodie (Ghana), Tiwa Savage (Nigeria) and Toofan (Togo) were nominated in the category of Best International Act(Africa) 2014.
Honestly we were not trying to be biased, our hearts pumped out, rest assured that Tiwa Savage stood the highest chance of winning in the category, owing to the fact that she’s been very outstanding in her ways in terms of voice, choreography, production song writing and other qualities…not that other acts were not doing well for themselves but…you know…you too might agree with us on this.
But alas! Davido beat hands down every other person on the list to winning! Wow! How did he do it? We asked…what happened to almighty Tiwa?
Then it dawned on us that there could be something Davido could have done right that Tiwa and others probably didn’t get right. What could that be?
But at least, you couldn’t say Davido is a better performer than others, or he had a better voice, best videos or team…
Okay, we can’t speak for how much effort other African acts put into winning in the category but we can
speak categorically about what Tiwa did or didn’t do, likewise Davido.
We were sure Tiwa, when on her way to the award, would have gone with high hopes just like us, thinking and assuring herself that she’d win no matter what! So it would have shocked her Davido got it…we are sure it did shocked her.
We then realised winning such an award doesn’t come by popularity or how good your songs and videos are alone…it’s more of canvassing for votes…more turning into a ‘beggar’ overnight and pleading with your fans, friends and family, even your enemies to vote for you.
So, Davido went ahead to beg for votes while Tiwa did little to beg…we bet she was riding on the fact that maybe she has a wide range of popularity internationally and maybe here, her name is one everyone’s lips with that ‘Eminado’ song and she’s won countless of local awards, done back to back shows…even her 'Wanted' video wasn't enough to get her to win.
Davido however didn’t sit upon his money and popularity, plus the fact that he’s made several international tours promoting his songs…he begged like no man’s job and he did get the award! Congrats to him for a
good begging job!
So at least now, Mrs Balogun knows what to do when next she gets such significant nomination.
Whats your view on this? Did she really not deserve the BET Award?
