There was pandemonium yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State as gunmen suspected to be kidnappers in a commando style, abducted a woman and her son at Enugu Park, along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in the commercial city.
The incident which occurred in the afternoon few metres away from the compound of the former president of Nigeria, the late Nnamdi Azikiwe, left some people with bullet wounds while the woman and her son whose identities were not yet known as at press time were allegedly whisked away by their abductors.
It was gathered that the mother and son were travelling in a black Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) when they were intercepted by the gunmen who operated in two cars, shooting sporadically for some minutes before zooming off.
Armed with AK47 rifles and other dangerous weapons, the gunmen threw the entire neighbourhood into total confusion as they had a field day and disappeared immediately they got their targets.
A source, who pleaded anonymity said: “As they were shooting, a man was hit in the leg and he was rushed to a nearby hospital. The shots were so many that travellers including policemen accompanying a bullion van had to stop.”
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, said he was yet to be informed of the incident, adding that he was making efforts to get the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Awada Police Station in whose jurisdiction the incident occurred.
